TimeMachine just needs to backup to a Mac disk volume. Whether that is an internal hard drive, an external Firewire/USB drive or a drive mounted over a network from a remote machine/server is not really important. As I previously mentioned, I use desktop Mac with a big drive for TimeMachine backups of my laptop. Seems to work well as I plug my laptop into the LAN when at my desk and TimeMachine does its thing.

Being quite new to this mac stuff, I know very little about time

service like Carbonite or something? I know you can use a local hard
disk or whatever but I think I would prefer a remote store for better
security. Is this possible?
