The N900 is a mobile computer. If you want to use it as a phone, i.e. without applications from extras or Ovi, then there is no need to upgrade the firmware. If you want to use it as a computer by installing applications, you should upgrade your OS, especially to get security updates for a Internet-centric device. Maintaining software and working around bugs for every minor release is a nightmare.
