All I know is that augustus asked him to write it, and I know from translating it last yr that there are certain passages in it alluding to and praising him. I do not know them offhand, could look though if u need it. I dont know about political sit. at that time, but had affect on later medieval life: most books from virgils time burnt b/cause of pagan beliefs in them, but not aeneid b/c many thought there was a paragraph prophesizing christ
