I want to offer bike route maps at www.freebikemaps.org. The U.S. seems
to have road layers for streets, rivers, railroads, airports, so we
already have an idea of where to go by car, canoe, train, and plane, but I
think we need a national bike route layer!
Granted, the first challenge was getting bike route data, and believe me,
I got an awful lot of "nos" from various trail and municipal
organizations, even for data that was already digitized. Little islands of
data out there...
But now, I have proposed bike routes for Baltimore, developed, and shared
by a kind former city planner. It's a good start. Ah, the astute among you
will notice that there are no bike maps up there yet. So far it's in paper
form.
1. Should I make a separate bike route layer, or just thematically code
the existing layer? Separate seems to make sense. Gotta learn even the
mechanics of that...
2. How do I reset the file pointers to the hard drive, given that the
streets layer remains on the CD after a Maptitude for the Web
installation? (this, even though I asked it to install the streets layer,
and the Installation notes say to never use the CD drive!)
Do I have to just remove the file from the layers, reload the file from
the D: drive, and reset all the settings? IS THERE ANY WAY TO GET A SIMPLE
ASCII FILE showing all the .map settings?
3. I'd like to create an interactive application, so that people can enter
data points, query the points. A sample concept for this so far is:
"Type of Point: pothole"
Or
"Type of Point: Other
Description: I think that the city council should pass an ordinance
allowing cyclists only to go both ways on this street that is one-way for
cars. It's the only way to avoid the messy intersection at 33rd and
Greenmount."
I'll be coming up with a sample form, and functionality, but any ideas
would be welcome.
4. What's the largest field size?
This is a volunteer effort, by the way. Anyone who would like to share
bike route data and ideas with freebikemaps.org is welcome! (You can
easily upload your files to the website.)
Sincerely,
Margie
