Maptitude - http://research.umbc.edu/~roswell/maptitude.html
Steve,
To make sure I was clear in our conversation offline, in order to join your
sales data to the correct enclosing zip:
1. Open the table with your sales data and check the zip field to see
whether it's numeric or character (if its numeric there will be no leading
zeroes in the northeast).
2. Open the attribute file for the zip point file (cczip5pt.bin) and add a
field with a name like "ZIP_ALT" as integer or character depending on what
you found in (1).
3. Highlight the field and use Edit-Fill-Formula with the following
formula(assumes sales zip field is numeric; if character, use string(zip)
and string(enclosing_zip) for the "then" and "else" clauses):
if ENCLOSING_ZIP=null then ZIP else ENCLOSING_ZIP
4. Join your sales data to the table on the "ZIP_ALT" field and run
Tools-Merge by Value on that field, aggregating sales.
5. To create a theme on sales, join the resulting merge table to the zip
boundary file. Once again, be careful to join using the proper field type
(character or numeric) so that you don't miss sales in the Northeast!
If you do this a lot for a lot of stores, ask me about a Maptitude add-in
that we wrote ($) that batch processes thematic maps on zip code sales and
saves them to acrobat files.
