Something that could be added concerning geocoding is to give some indication of the quality of the geocoding result and in addition to the long/lat, the census block group, census tract. The quality could be represented by a score which  would be similar to that given by GDT's geocoding engine or Centrus.

Subject: [Maptitude] Creating Geographic Databases on the Fly

Maptitude - http://research.umbc.edu/~roswell/maptitude.html

This one is about creating geographic databases on the fly, using Maptitude for the Web
(it was Bud Bradley question a few days ago).

Creating a complete geographic database on the fly from a table with hundreds of records is best
done using the Maptitude desktop, with the "Locate by Address" tool, followed by the "Locate by Pointing"
tool for the records not found. In general, the geocoding process is iterative, and you need to
verify the results and correct some missing locations or cleanup the input text addresses that contain
errors or missing information.

The same functionality may not be appropriate for on the fly computation from a web page,
because the process takes some time, and you need to decide what to do with the records not found.

On the other hand, if you prepare ahead of time an editable geographic database,
you can let the users on the web add points to it one at the time, by specifying an address
or by clicking on a point in the map. They could fill a form to fill the attributes for the newly created record.

Currently, you need to program such functionality in VBScript. You can get started by using
some of the geocoding functions provided in our VBScript templates. The GISDK provides
functions for adding points to a geographic database, one at the time.
