Maptitude - http://research.umbc.edu/~roswell/maptitude.html

It seems to be that the easiest way to perform this task is to do the
following:

1. join your sales data to the cczip5pt.cdf file.
2. Join the cczip5.cdf (zip boundaries) to the joined view created in step
one using the field "enclosing zip." This creates a 1 to many join which
automatically aggregates any numerical data fields (i.e. "sales").
3. Shade the Zip Code Boundaries by Sales.

The primary advantages of this, in my opinion are as follows:

1. is that it doesn't require you to build or modify any of the base zip
code geographies (merge by value creates new layers).
2. the map themes will still be based on zip code boundaries, which may be
important (areas of influence create different boundaries altogether).
3. the joined views and themes can be saved in the map and automatically
updated as new sales data becomes available. This requires that the sales
file is always of the same table structure and file name (e.g. field names,
types, etc). Simply overwrite the previous sales file with a new one and,
when you open the map, the new data is read and shaded appropriately.

Let me know if you'd like more information on this approach...

Good Luck!
