For my dot density map, I do not want Maptitude to take the total value to
determine the number of dots by the break point and then allow Maptitude to
allocate all of the points to the areas. Rather, I want a case by case dot
density map so a true representation of each individual area is shown, not
by the total area.
Also, based on allocating the dot density theme based on the total area, how
does the analyst interpret on a case-by-case
basis when viewing the actual placement of the dots (i.e., how is the actual
point placed based on the total value system). Is it based on centroid
weighting based on the value or how?

The goal is to have the right number of dots. If one area has a value of
1500 and another has a value of 500 you want two dots, not just one. So,
some areas with values of less than 1000 will have dots, while some areas
will have their number of dots adjusted so that overall there will be the
right number of dots.
The alternative of treating each area individually is not wise. The last
time we checked, some of the competition failed badly when we dot-mapped
states with one dot per million people, by not coming close to the right
total number of dots.
