I reiterate my point, which no one has refuted that the song laments the fall of the South. It doesn't mention slavery, the 800,000 who died in the war, etc. It a "lost cause" song. In the link are some interesting points about it. Especially, the three of the four members of the Band were Canadian and knew very little about the Civil War.
