Robbie Robertson's approach of "not siding with any of the parties" means that 
people can interpret the song according to their preconceptions.  Racists can 
interpret it as pro-confederate.  Anti-war people can interpret it as anti-war. 
 Yet others can be indifferent to the meaning of the words and just regard it 
as a nice tune.

This ambiguity is commercially advantageous.  It enables The Band to sell more 
records.
