The title phrase, appropriated by Marx, actually predates him.  It’s Latin, and 
found in a play by Terrence:
HOMO SUM: HUMANI NIHIL A ME ALIENUM PUTO
“I’m a man/human: I consider nothing human alien to me.”
The verb comes at the end of the sentence; “puto” means “[I] think.”  We get 
the English words “putative,” “computer” etc. from it.
