[I agree generally with John O'Brian here in his generalizations but I don't
see that as in conflict with Hari's paper]

So...again, while I agree that the context for this paper is very oddly the
very narrow "ML" currents in the world today it could just as easily been
addressed without references to such groups. It just stuck out as weird to me
why the focus on such organizations.

It think the paper could of been broken in two, one dealing withe actual
science of gender and sex specifically, and then one dealing with political
organizations, none of which appear to have any expertise in science at all. I
would of included the very sad case of Stalinist Russia as well in this because
though it is very, very interesting, doesn't quite add much to the discussion
of the science. I did appreciate the research done to specify the reasons the
USSR abandoned and then turned on that country's gay community. Very sad that
has huge political implications based on the political climate in the USSR, not
just on that one issue but other issues concerning the subject of sex and
gender.

I did read through this very long essay. I thought overall save for my
criticism in the first paragraph, it was truly an excellent attempt at
clarification. My hat goes off to Hari in this very, very serious effort. I
would say that in the very beginning where Hari sets up what he believes are
the two positions staked out by the sides in this debate is overly simplistic
and simply not accurate, at least not impressionisticly on my part. Most folks
who defend the thesis that transgenderism is based on gender identity do not
dismiss the biological science at all, they simply reject the idea that biology
determines destiny alone.

Overall I'm very glad Hari penned this giant essay. If he "cleaned it up" and
removed the references to MLism he could submit this to all sorts of journals
on the left that would republish it.
