Your question has a narrow incomplete answer in there was a research study of limited numbers that produced results by Alfred Kinsey that produced much homophobic reaction and denials of what then was considered in 1948 - such large numbers being not strictly hetero.
However, as Marxists we should be aware that is not "all" about this subject or other related subjects around sexuality. There are the actual oppressions and other discrimination carried out - and those either oppressing and or not wanting to address such reality. Today there are many more open people who stand proud of their sexuality - than when more repressed and isolated and no support in 1948. And the conditions have changed in many places because of a independent mass movement organized by the people who are oppressed. The harm carried out must include reparations from the organized religious institutions that caused much. There is also the state both national and locally who carried out much harm - and efforts to now cover such up.
