This was a book proposal that I started writing about 6 months ago and then
added a few things to this morning.

https://econospeak.blogspot.com/2024/06/book-proposal-marxs-fetters-and-realm.html

Marx never renounced revolution. He did, however, repeatedly insist on a
*prerequisite*, a *precondition*: the substantial reduction of the hours of
wage labour. The rationale for that precondition can be found in Marx's
discussion of disposable time in the Grundrisse.

One of the cornerstones of the classical or traditional interpretation of
Marx comes from his preface to *A Contribution to the Critique of Political
Economy -- *his discussion there of the forces and relations of production
and of the era of social revolution that begins when the relations become
fetters on the development of the forces.

That dialectic of forces and relations is echoed five years later in his
draft of the beginning of chapter 48 of vol 3 of *Capital, *where Marx
discusses the true realm of freedom, which contains that statement, "The
reduction of the working day is the basic prerequisite.” (for the true
realm of freedom to flourish).

Marx did not present the rationale for that claim there but it is repeated
in chapter 10 of volume 1 and in his Inaugural Address to the First
International. The real analysis underlying Marx's "prerequisite" assertion
is developed in the *Grundrisse,* particularly in his discussion of
disposable time.

Cheers,

Tom Walker (Sandwichman)
