Dave, I think there is some value in distinguishing the kind of territorial expansionism that occurred as the US (and Canadians, and Argentines, and Portuguese in Brazil) "filled in" the continental area by either killing off or conquering the indigenous populations (THe Dutch and British in South Africa also comes to mind) ----
Filling in continguous areas, especially with settlers, seems to me DIFFERENT from jumping to what were clearly separate entities (the Phillipines -- Vietnam -- Korea [for the Japanese]) --- I think THOSE acquisitions were what Lenin was talking about when he talked about imperialism --- and I think that is the debate about China today --- Does she aspire to control BEYOND the traditional "Han" empire?
