Michael is right. It is one thing to free Tibetan serfs (nearly slaves)in the early 1950s, and to consolidate territorial control of necessity in 1959 because the CIA infiltrated forces into Tibet, while it is another thing to contest with the U.S. and Japan for domination of raw materials and markets throughout southeast Asia. After liberating the serfs, did the PRC lead Tibetans to a better life by taking steps with their assent, or did it impose capitalist production by fiat, or ... ?
