I'm seriously suggesting that if the German revolution had not failed in 1919, 
we would not have had the instability of the Weimar republic and the subsequent 
rise of the Nazis. The miscalculation was that the Berlin and Bavarian 
uprisings would be successful.  I almost certainly  would have made the same 
miscalculation in the heady days after the Russian revolution when it seemed to 
be spreading to Austria-Hungary, Germany, Europe, and beyond. A united front of 
the KPD and SPD might have still stopped the Nazis in the early 30's, but the 
real opportunity to crush fascism "in the egg" was narrowly missed a decade 
earlier.

So, no, you can't place me in the Timothy Snyder camp which says Naziism was 
"provoked" by Communism, as though the left-wing workers' movement of that 
period somehow bore equal or greater responsiblity for the genocide against the 
Jews, Roma, and other vulnerable minorities.
