Anarchists employed individual terrorism as a strategy to awaken the masses and by example to stir them into action. Marxists condemned it as a strategy, but found it necessary to employ red terror to counter white terror in conditions of civil war.
I suspect if Hamas could rerun the events of October 7, it would take greater care to avoid violent acts against civilians by its forces and by the young Gazans who followed them through the gates which could be used for propaganda purposes by the Israelis. The hostage taking IMO was a legitimate action intended as a bargaining chip to free Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails which had worked before but probably should have been restricted to military personnel. Hamas probably didn't calculate that the Netanyahu government could care less about the hostages and was bent on the murderous ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians.
