It seems to me that any strategy for Palestinian liberation has to involve winning at least some section of the Israeli Jewish population to its side. I don’t think that slaughtering some 600 civilians — that’s Juan Cole’s number — is the way to achieve that. On the contrary, it plays into the hands of the Israeli expansionist right that’s determined to seize Gaza, put in Jewish settlements and expel large numbers of Palestinians in the West Bank.
In previous years, when Hamas sent barrages of small missiles into southern Israel, it was met with a quick and brutal IDF response that killed hundreds or thousands of Gazans and destroyed considerable housing. What did Hamas think would be the response to October 7? We now know that Hamas met with officials from Hezbollah and Iran and asked them to commit to joining in the October 7 attack, but they said they weren’t ready. Hamas went ahead anyway, knowing it would be met with a furious IDF response that would not only kill tens of thousands but would make Gaza unlivable. How could they not know with people like Ben-Gvir in key cabinet posts and Netanyahu as the PM? Thousand of Hamas fighters are dead while others are wounded. Either the IDF or the Egyptian army will prevent new supplies going through the tunnels, and Qatar will likely cut off its previous Israeli-approved $30-million monthly subsidy to Hamas.
