Whatever domestic policy differences exist between the right-centre and increasingly far right Republicans and the left-centre Democrats is a reflection of their respective social bases. Republican electoral support rests on the petty bourgeoisie as well as the declining and more politically backward sector of the working class in the red states and rust belt pockets of the Midwest swing states. The Democratic base is composed in large part of service sector workers in the health care, education, government, leisure, entertainment, and other industries spawned by the postwar welfare state and heavily concentrated in the more economically dynamic blue states as well as all major cities. It’s characteristic of many intellectuals across the political spectrum outside of the working class to look down on the tens of millions of its Republican supporters as crazies and deplorables and on the tens of millions of its Democratic Party supporters as belonging to a middle class aspirational elite.
