I tend to agree with you workerpoet. I'm in the same situation as you are. But the Bund's heyday is well over 100 years ago. What's missing from Abraham's static view of Jews is that it is completely non-contemporary. The Bund grew out of a specific period during the proletarianization of the Jewish petty-bourgeoisie in the late 19th Century Polish and Russian Empires that consolidated a very unique ethnic/national entity, basically the Litvak Yiddish speaking Jews of Poland, Lithuanian (which is where the term Litvak is meant to describe), and Belarus/Russia.
This completely ended due to the Holocaust. As a decedent of Litvak Jews, I can attest to the complete de-linking of hyphenated Jews (Canadian-Jews, Jewish-Americans, Franco-Americans and, most notably, Israeli Jews). You and I, it appears, are part of what Abraham terms the "Assimilationist Jewish Left"...a term that is basically synonymous with Deustcher's "Non-Jewish Jew"...and something I'm proud of. Thus the material basis for a new "Bund" doesn't exist. [One of the reasons the Bund was weak/non-existent among Hungry's pre-war population of 250,000 and Germany's 500,000 German-Jews was because they largely didn't speak any Yiddish at all.
