Based on the commentary I've seen, Mamdani's supporters also anticipate Trump will again turn "rabid dog" on him at some point but they nevertheless think that the meeting was a big win for him - a view shared across the political spectrum. Mamdani has also been careful to express little more than the hope that he and Trump will cooperate in future. Interviewed by NBC News today, he stuck by his characterization of Trump as a "fascist" and, as far as I could tell, didn't depart from the script he used so successfully on the campaign trail. So I think it's unlikely he will lose credibility with his supporters if Trump does return to form. It's also possible Trump has decided to tack more to the centre in view of his low poll ratings but he lacks the self-restraint and political discipline of his much younger Democratic rival.
