Gorz’s views from the 60’s are good in theory but where in practice has
so-called "non-reformist reformism”  won " immediate gains that shift power
away from elites” to “clear the way for more radical transformations”, as the
Jacobin article would have it?

With respect to the issue at hand, I think the Mamdani leadership should have
referred Ossé’s endorsement to the DSA membership despite the DP establishment
having undoubtedly made it clear that allowing Ossé to defeat Jeffries, a real
possibility, would result in the DP-led state government starving his
administration of funds and resuming their efforts to crush his movement.

Marxists should of course participate in the electoral process to mobilize and
educate the masses but should not cling to office at all costs when bribed or
blackmailed by their enemies. Rather than capitulate, better to sponsor a
referendum or resign and call an election in order to rally the base against
such threats even at the risk of losing power.  I opposed Tsipras’ capitulation
and am concerned that Mamdani’s refusal to endorse Ossé may point in that
direction. If that turns out to be so, it will do significantly more
long-lasting damage to the movement than defying the ruling class and for the
present foregoing the promised reforms.
