All workers, not only the most liberal and better educated, have an equal need to go beyond reformism. However, all workers have always been reformists until the system has exhausted its capacity for reform. Marxists have rightly joined and often led workers in fighting for basic reforms - the right to organize and strike for better pay and working conditions in the workplace and for democratic rights and improved living conditions in the wider society outside of it. However, at the same time many have been reluctant to acknowledge they are also objectively reformist whatever their subjective claims and self-identification as “revolutionary" Marxists. It is only when a repressive state blocks all outlets for peaceful change that workers, students, and intellectuals are forced of necessity to move beyond reformist to revolutionary politics. Until then, the internet can serve as a useful medium for politically educating and helping to mobilize selected groups of workers fighting for democratic reforms at home and expressing solidarity with struggles of the oppressed abroad. But issuing exclamatory demands and calling on the workers to fight for communism in the current period is more apt to be seen by most (as well as by Marxists active in their ranks) as eccentric and sectarian rather than as a meaningful contribution based on a thoughtful analysis of how best to advance their cause. Charles will again ask for "evidence" to support these assertions. As for everyone, these are only impressions shaped by my own particular experience. Others may have experienced working class culture differently. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
