Hello Marv:

Yes all this is in general true. I think Tooze is however, at some deeper level
quite conflicted about Marxism. He engaged in a 'dialogue' about this, but I
never read it fully enough to really comment - I think it was a dialogue with -
was it Alex Callinicos or someone like that. Sorry - too busy to be bothered to
unearth it... it was while he was in China for a period.

Look - I read Tooze as an indicator, and as a source of at times - of interest.
He carries at times some relatively unusual art illustrations that are good
also.

But frankly when he is on a platform at the World Economic Forum and you see
him next to Christine Legarde - it is difficult to see him as anything other
than a bribed tamed intellectual. Yes I get it - having the opportunity to form
economic views is heady stuff. But...

... Much as Marx called the prize-fighters - in his preface in Capital. Thank
goodness he has not emerged from the Epstein files... I suspect he will not.

And my use of the word 'bribed'' is rather loose I grant that. To be in such a
high profile still at Columbia, demands a certain reticence in what he says, so
he exercises that self-censorship. There is an interaction there. I am wary of
that word 'dialectical'. But maybe my meaning might be understood. Michael
Roberts is often aware of how closely one should read Tooze, if I recall.

H
