All rings true what you say about Tooze, Hari. In the absence of a revolutionary movement from below, I've never known of a prominent social democratic or Communist intellectual, trade union leader or politician vying for influence and/or power who hasn't adapted in some degree to the prevailing reformist consciousness of the masses and the economic pressures of the bourgeoisie. A real Hobson's choice, IMO: accomodate to those pressures or be removed from office or your job and consigned to the margins of political life. Mamdani will likely be the latest left-wing insurgent to succumb to these pressures, his modest program notwithstanding .
