I too was going to respond to Mark and John’s comments about what - today -
constitutes solidarity for the Cuban people. But as to be expected not quite
echoing Michael's point.
However - to adopt a position of solidarity does not mean to " not criticise”.

For - The origins of the inability of the Cuban state to defend itself against
today’s USA imperialism - at bottom - reflects the refusal from the days of
Castro’s first power -to decisively move to adopt to socialism. Hence a
critiism.
His own, and Guevera’s guerrilla substitution for working class and peasant
actions was the hallmark. Thereafter accession to power came when USA
imperialism decided its own agents were clearly exposed. It is not necessary to
rehearse Castro’s overtures to USA impeirlism, before finally being forced to
become depndent upon then revisionist USSR imperilaims. Until the latter could
not help… and this steady slide into dependency on tourism and medical
exportism. I do not intend to rehearse all this, many have exposed and we did
in the distinctly un-fashionable manner for the 1960s (only web-published in
the 1990s -> http://ml-review.ca/aml/CommunistLeague/Compass101-Cuba92.htm and
http://ml-review.ca/aml/MLOB/GuerrilaEliteFIN.htm ).

I felt a grain of truth in Mark and John’s comments - in asking is it timely to
kick the Cuban people’s anguish a step farther to criticise at this time? It is
why actually we ourselves chose not to republish the above two articles on our
current site. For us, we refrained at this particular time. But I do think
criticisms need to be voiced. The timing may well be considered so as not to
“rub salt into wounds”.

But these criticisms need to surface. For some of the Cuban people, past key
mis-steps are certain to be analysed. Some might well be asking - even now - at
this bitter moment, "as we who look back why did our socialism fail?”
For these a criticism may be useful.

Cheers Hari
