John, the conditions you note are exactly why I'm in favor of on demand nuclear
energy. It is not dangerous but can and should discuss the specifics of this.
Those conditions you noted...medical needs, refrigeration, etc., is the basis I
would give talk at the Left Forum and other venues on why solar power is not
the answer and nuclear is. Where you live solar power will not supply
round-the-clock refrigeration. It will not provide medical ERs and clinics a
watt of power when the sun sets. Sorry...the rotation of the earth works
against your argument. Intermittency is the problem with solar and wind and
utility scale batteries, where they are being built, are hugely expensive and
work better, in any event, with any on demand power.

Every country that decided to bring in a double-digit percentage of solar on
their grid...and this includes France (80% nuclear) for a short few
years...first had to start building fossil fueled gas turbines because solar
all needs back up. Of course in the real world of energy planning, there is a
huge debate about all this which is healthy. My side has basically won this
debate in that almost all countries now are considering or have already
accomplished getting rid of their anti-nuclear bans. This is positive as
nuclear remains quite safe and is not used as a weapon. Yes, the Russians have
actually taken over the nuclear power plant (4 reactors) and caused all sort of
problem but they never targeted it nor has Ukraine, in their vastly increased
targeting of Russian energy infrastructure, target the many nuclear power
plants in European Russia. We can discuss nuclear accidents and invite you to
do so as it is a fascinating learning exercise in physics and energy systems.
But your fear of radiation, mirroring that of many people, is not really
scientifically OR medically based.

Cuba: this small nation had no choice at all. They do have a plan to move away
from fossil fuels despite being totally wedded to it. They have no hydro
energy. They stopped building their nuclear power plant when their economy
collapsed. They were kept alive by contributions from Yetlsin's Russia and
discounted oil. But solar, since it is only available during around 6 hours
during the day (to produce the name-plate capacity of a solar panel is only at
solar 'high', a few hours before and after noon) would of been inadequate to
run hospitals, refrigeration, and their entire economy on.

Since we have discussed this with not other intervention among list members I
will give you the last word on this so we can end this thread and maybe start a
new thread on the specific issues I raised above and in all my other responses
to you that you seemed to ignore...

David
