>I'm sorry but I'm not so familier with Novell... could anyone define

Basically, a Novell SAP is a list of servers and the services that
each one provides. Things like File, Print, etc services. Usually,
they are sent via broadcasts or via a version of RIP updates. Once
Novell 4.x came out, Novell opted to go with a directory service called
NDS which is quite good. Now, clients can query the NDS server for
servers vs. be told about ALL the servers every few minutes.

Understood.

They can't ping the Linux box at all? Are there routers in betweeen
the Linux box and the clients?

Understand that there is both IP RIP and IPX RIP. The Novell IPX RIP
shouldn't hose any IP routers between the firewall and the client.

>Therefore I ask, is there a way to

Windows 95 and NT (without the RRAS server) doesn't listen to RIP in the
first place. They only do static IP and DHCP client stuff.

>is it definately

The Novell servers only need RIP to send out IPX routing updates and
to send out SAP lists. You don't need it for a simple network but
once it gets complicated, RIP is ok but its VERY broadcast intensive.
If you're shop is going to get big, look into changing the timers
for the SAP updates or even look into going with NLSW (RIP replacement).
