John, I thought initially that a simple svn checkout of 3 was working with a slight tweak (editing api.py), but it looks like there are still some dependencies that don't show up immediately but that do show up when trying to run mpl1; it is again the ui code trying to pull in things from outside traits. So I don't have an immediate solution. It looks like the effort to make traits independently installable still has a ways to go.
