If you want an easy install and most or all of the software in the 
newer distributions and some room to grow and store some large files, 
then I'd say 4 GB.

You could get by with *much* less as Darren said, but that's what I'd 
consider to be the minimum to be happy over the intermediate/long 
term.  For me anyway...

It depends an awful lot on what you want to do with the machine.
