I installed Mandrake again and I think I know where the problem lies.
I tried to configure the connection via eth1 instead of eth0. So, the
onboard ethernet card. This does work with DHCP. I could also not configure
DHCP on eth0, just like SuSE Linux with the same configuration for eth0-cfg
as eth1-cfg. So it has to do with the driver or something of that sort.
Under MacOS 8 with a special Farallon driver I am able to connect to the
internet with eth0, so in principle the card works. Now we still have to let
the card work under Linux !!
