Hm - why not just leave things at runlevel 5 (X11 login)
and hit Ctrl-Opt-F1 to switch to a console when you want
to log in? (There are obvious reasons not to if your
system is RAM-constricted, but RAM is cheap these days.)

It's not automatic, but you can always make the low-rez
display the default & hit Ctrl-Opt-+ to change to a higher
rez. Hmm... now if you're talking about separate console
and X11 resolutions, this might be possible using BootX.
Or if SVGAtextmode works on PPC systems, that's another
possibility (I've discovered the joys of SVGAtextmode since
putting Debian on an old PC laptop).
