OS X is 'based' on FreeBSD, but there are many differences. The 
Darwin mailing list is littered with those that attempt to configure 
OS X the same way they would Linux or BSD, only to run into problems.

OS X mounts all partitions besides the boot partition under /Volumes 
unless you get into bed with automounter. Some applications don't 
follow symlinks because they access the filesystem through Carbon.

There is a way to specify a different partition for swap, but it's 
50/50 as to if it makes a performance difference.
