It also is a one-trick-pony, only good for a limited number of uses without
getting "under the hood". Also it is completely insecure by running all of
your services by default, waiting for a portscan. Try Mandrake.

The software idea you have led to the creation of NT Server 4. Forget it.

If an old piece of equipment is not worth a lot of time, who is going to write
this amazing software that will run on it?

Take your time and learn the tools that you need to use. Choose a camp - BSD
or Linux - then pick a distribution and stick with it. If you want it to run
on alternative hardware, then you don't have many choices: Debian, OpenBSD,
NetBSD.

If you want a one-click install, there are ways to script installs on many
operating systems. Ask on the mailing lists and people will probably let you
try their favorites.

Whining about the lack of one-click Unix server install on old wierd Mac
hardware is just stupid and a pollution of the internet. You are so lucky
that the Open Source people bothered porting any software to your Mac at all.
Apple told you to go screw yourself, and still refuses to release source code
or documentation for the hardware they have abandoned.

Ok, the point has been firmly driven in the ground, I will take my leave.

You may get an idea of the pain of porting Linux to the Macintosh by reading
Alan Cox's story:
