G3/233 Powerbooks seem to go for around $200-300 on ebay.au, and they'll give you solid Linux support, and a reasonably fast machine, with 32 bit Cardbus slots, so you can add USB. If you avoid the first generation G3 which was just an upgraded 3400, you could even run OS X on it.

Secondly, I think I heard about a program called Wish I were which can
modify the gestalt ID to fool installers, could anyone put any truth to
this? I know it can be used on 68k machines in conjunction with a PPC
upgrade to install OS 8.5 / 9.


This won't help you with Linux. It's not installing that's the problem, it's the actual hardware of the machine. To run LinuxPPC (ie Yellowdog) on a 1400 you'll need the Nubus machine kernel from http://nubus-pmac.sourceforge.net/ . IIRC there's no support for Ethernet, but PCMCIA has just been added, so you could use an addon network card.
