Hi,
I attempted to run OpenBSD-I386 as a desktop operating system after being hooked on BSD. I found the desktop performance to be quite sluggish as compared to Linux, and FreeBSD, which was quite a let down given how cool and fun OpenBSD has been to admin server wise.
I was running an AMD Athlon 1Ghz, and found application load times, multimedia performance (xawtv - tv tuner app), and all other X11/GTK based applications to be quite unacceptable performance wise - switching to FreeBSD over OpenBSD for desktop use (i386).
A recent benchmark was done...

...between NetBSD 2.0 and FreeBSD 5.3 that more or less considers them on par with each other performance wise. I'm sure with enough tinkering under the hood OpenBSD could be made to outperform the other BSD's. Mac OS X also employs a lot of FreeBSD 5 in it, and feel right at home when working with all things that I love about BSD in general from the command line.
I also share John Klo's opinion about OpenBSD not being as mature as NetBSD - which has been my primary reason for not putting a B&W G3 into production as an OpenBSD router/firewall. It would still be a lot of fun to try though :)
Eric
I am wondering whether there are BSD users here. I believe both NetBSD and Open BSD run on Macs. The OpenBSD I suppose is used for serving purposes. How does a BSD work as a desktop, with a Gnome, or K environment, and say a Gnome, or other UI?
