I tried it out here, sending myself a message with a file attached,
then forwarding it to my alias account. The attached file in the
forwarded message is converted to text, or so it seems, which appears
as a mess on screen. It is there, but it looses the information as to
what mime type it is, and becomes a part of the mail, instead of being
an attachment.

This part of the problem I can't understand? Using MDII 1.3, writing a
mail, selecting attach file and selecting the desired file as a file
to be attached, allows me to attach everything to any mail.
