Well, I understood "all other things being equal" to mean the ATRAC version,
given that that was the topic being discussed.  

My understanding of your overall comment was that you meant that if the
ATRAC version is the same in two different MD players, the sound will be the
same, e.g. whether the players is Sharp A or Sharp B or a sharp vs a sony
(otherwise what was the point of the comment?  I mean, obviously a disc
recorded in "a Sharp recorder" will sound the same if played in another
"Sharp recorder" which is an identical model).  So that's what I had trouble
understanding.  Apologies if I misunderstood you.
