David,
Others may disagree with me but as a general rule of thumb, I have found the best all round performance for street engines has been to where possible match port the head & manifold, especially if side draft carbies are used. There are a lot of other things to consider (valves, cam etc) to get optimum performance but this is a good starting point.

can anyone tell me what the best size for ports on a W53 head on an L16 would be?
a friend told me you can go pretty big with the ports but that I shouldn't because if you go too big you start to loose your bottom end and make too much top end
or something like that
I've never ported a head before so I have no idea
