Brad,
Nissan still doesn't really make available to the general motorist what you
would call a close ratio gearbox especially for a rwd application. If
anything, the current late model cars have even wider ratios than they
offered in the 70-80 era. I guess it's an economy vs performance issue,
lighter cars that are fwd and efi engines with very linear torque
characteristics, eg look at the SR and GA engines in the Pulsars. A few very
early Z boxes could be classified as close ratio as such but these were the
exception. Hence the offering of "option" boxes to the rev heads created
it's own market and it was very lucrative at the time.

A good number of these so called option boxes were not as strong or as
reliable as the notorious Celica steel box which had a very good bunch of
ratios for all sorts of competition, they are so good that there was many a
308 V8 in front of them and they were around the $400 mark with a one off
outlay for a dello bell housing. Mazda RX7 boxes were popular as well
although imho not in the same league as the Toy box. I haven't got the SR20t
box ratios handy but if the FJ20t ZL71B box is anything to go by the ratios
in it are wider than the average L box eg 1st 3.6; 2nd 2.3; 3rd 1.4; 4th
1.0; 5th 0.833.

The problem with Nissan production boxes is the spacing between 2nd & 3rd
which is typically around 37% and the spacing between 3rd & 4th is typically
24% Even in the close ratio N3130 L series box the 3rd and 4th ratios are
the same as the wide ratio N3030 box but in the N3130 the 2nd to 3rd
reduction is only 31% as 1st gear is fairly steep at 2.906.

Compare this to the FJ20 Turbo box the spacing is 1-2 36%, 2-3 39%, 3-4 29%
and 4-5 17%. This box with it's fairly low 1st & 2nd ratios leads to the
extensive discussion recently as to which diff ratio is best to use in your
FJt/510 as the sweet L ratio of 3.9 seems to be a little on the low side on
the road in the peaky powered FJt. Anyhow this has turned into an essay so
I'll leave it at that.

regards

Terry

silly question time Terry,
Is there a late model Nissan box with reasonable close ratios. I am looking
at fitting a Supra box to a 1600 rally/club car as they have reasonable
ratios and good strength but would obviously prefer something that would
bolt straight up

Thanks
