Ignition problem solved all - thanks for the replies.  So simple I could
slap myself.
Pull out plug 1, establish TDC and lo and behold, rotor button pointing
away from radiator (have I possibly inserted shaft 180deg out?) where the
lead for plug 4 was previously.  Reattach leads in correct config and she
runs like a charm.  Phew.

Now that's sorted out, time to move on to the next Datsun project.
