I've only known it to be a common problem on the early ones but it can
always happen, particularly if the bonnet catch is not fitted properly.
My fix was to use a thick rubberised strap bolted to the "hook" fitting
under the bonnet. The strap hangs down and I used an aircraft locking pin,
to pin the other end of the strap to a driving light cross bar in front of
the grill.
Aircraft locking pins have little balls in the sides of the pin, which
retract when you push or pull on a ring at the end of the pin. The balls
lock the pin in what ever it is inserted into. (sounds rude, but like all
good balls, and aircraft equipment, they do the job very well).
Of course the bonnet never popped again after I repaired and adjusted its
release mechanism, despite rallying the car for about four years. But I used
the strap at all times after that experience.
