hi james
to get them apart there is a tool called a tie rod end puller. you
hammer it in between then screw a big bolt down, which pushes
the ball joint bolt down, splitting them ie the bolt you screw in does
the work of your hammer.
this procedure is very painless (i had both done in 10 mins).
otherwise you get them apart without this tool, you put a crowbar
or something in a position to prise them apart. then while using
prising force hit the SIDE of the tie rod - this jarring action
eventually splits them apart, but it is nowhere near as easy as with
the ball joint puller tool.
