Denzil,
If you want to have a quiet system with "tube headers" you can. Lengthen the
secondary pipes 10" - 12" (254mm - 300mm for the imperially challenged) to
lower the resonant frequency of the system. Fit a good resonator just after
the 2 into 1 section joins. Add a good quality muffler after the rear
suspension arch and it should be reasonable. Not as quiet as stock but you
will have better performance that a stock system and have better fuel
economy as well.
I think the "tube headers" are worth the expense as the best bang for buck
improvement you can do and will pay for the cost quickly in improved fuel
economy.
My tuppence worth anyway.
Cheers

Brian,

I beg to differ on the issue of headers they are very noisy from inside an
un-insulated Datsun, best to use a stock 4/2/1 cast manifold which flow
pretty well and quietly, going back to a 2" pipe and free-flow muffler.

The tube headers I had on my L20B drove me mad on long trips, and also gave
a lot of trouble with exhaust system resonances and vibration which the
heavier cast-iron manifold managed to damp out.

Especially since you say you aren't one-eyed about performance.
