Paul,
I'm told that the L20b blocks cast in Japan are much better than the locally
cast ones, so try and lookout for an identifier such as NISSAN JAPAN or
similar. The locally cast ones are softer and wear quicker.
Also, if the budget allows, a better way to increase compression than
shaving the cylinder head is by using a 39cc (W53) or 41cc (A87) closed or
'peanut' chambered head (easy to tell them from open chambered heads, the
combustion chambers look like peanut or kidney shaped) as opposed to the
open chambered 45.2cc U67. In addition to increasing compression, the
peanut design is more resistant to detonation. I had the intake ports on my
W53 opened to 40mm, and it flows really nicely.
Shame the rings on that motor were stuffed, so all the extra compression
just got blown past the pistons, but you get that sometimes ;)

PS I also ran 1.5" SU's on this motor and with a pretty feral camshaft,
still got 25-30mpg when it was treated well (not often :) I've also heard
that the stock 1600 carby will make a L20b run like crap, a member of the
1600 club has a 240K carb on his (pretty much stock) L20b which makes it run
much nicer. Worth a look maybe!

Thanks for the info Ken. I'm thinking of adding a few 'bits' to my 1981 200B
L20B. Does anyone know the difference between the L20Bs that came out in
various Datsuns? I guess the 'desirable features' is all you need to know.
I can get some extractors and the electronic ignition. Is there a different
water pump for the auto? My motor is from an automatic. I can also get the
clutch and flywheel, and a 'big' cam. That's the only info my friend has
about it...he says it's extreme.
I wouldn't mind DIY port work too...might look into that. I've got a ye olde
carby...I dont think I'll get twin SUs because I'm a cheapskate on fuel (you
have to use PULP with 9.5:1 don't you?)
