Mark, Petrol shelf life is mainly effected by the light ends (lower molecular weight hydrocarbons) evaporating. These light ends tend to be more volitile and burn quickly.
I don't know what the shelf life in a gerry can is, but if the container seals well then probably at least a few months. I don't know what the effects of oxidation on fuel is or whether there are antioxidants in petrol. This means that next year those people wishing to run leaded (avgas) fuels may do so, this is assuming your state government permits it. In NSW the state government has issued an exemption to motor racing, and will allow the use of leaded fuels. For all those who are running Avgas in their cars, a pointer that some one told me recently. Do not buy your Avgas from race tracks. Generally, due to the relatively low turn over of the fuel in their tanks, the fuel is not as fresh as at an air field. The fuel from air fields is apparently much "fresher" due to a higher rate of usage. I generally turn up at the local airfield with the race car on the trailer and gerry cans in hand - I have had no problems with supply so far. Does anyone know what the shelf life for petrol is, and how it is effected over time (eg, sitting in gerry cans etc) Does it actually go "off" as such?
