You're correct, it was the black circle sign was what I got confused about.
When I started driving it meant over 50mph as long as you can prove it's
safe to do so - bit of an open ticket to do 80+ mph everywhere and basically
if a cop could catch you in his HQ 202 trimatic you were nicked, you only
had to look out for the odd XU1 and Charger. They did away with the
de-restriction signs in NSW/ACT years ago when the 100 kmh was introduced,
some states may still use them like NT which may still have open speed
limit. There's been some talk about reducing that.

on a white background.
Apparently in the good old days it meant 'no speed limit' but now it means
110Kph.
