200psi@ wot cranking sounds like a good compression to cam match to me.160psi is getting a bit low as my L20 turbo gets 150 psi with a fairly late closing cam and 7.8:1 comp ratio.A mate has a holden6 that had a wild cam in it but didnt put down the power that it should have (160rwhp).The cranking compression was 150-160psi with a static comp of 11.5:1.Unable to get more comp we decided to fit a smaller duration cam with earlier inlet closing. With the new 305 duration cam the cranking comp went to 200psi and the engine felt stronger right across the range the hp rose to 190rwhp.After some checking we found that the original cam was designed for a methanol slurping speedway setup using super hi comp. The next thing we're trying on this engine is a longer rod combo.

chris,

can you define a 'worked' L20B for us ??

200 psi @ crank speed to me indicates a standard camshaft with bugger-all overlap. you either have a new mild engine or you have about 13:1 comp with a 72-76 deg cam ??

my 76 cam with 11:1 comp only managed 160 psi (holding the throttle open).

sometimes when you clean down an engine when rebuilding, it is possible to get water in the oil. the water boils out of the oil after a few mins driving, however, i agree with terry. if there is oil in the water - there is definately a problem that needs addressing.

good luck.

cheers,

dunc.
