Keep saving, Johnty. Does it absolutely have to be a turbo? A good NA SR20 will make a pretty quick Datto for a fair bit less dough and heaps less insurance grief. I saw a very recent VVL/VVT SR20 engine on the floor of a local wrecker/importer recently and he was willing to "give" it away for $1200. These produce 180KW out of the box, not underpowered for a 1600 Datto. (Same guy had a couple of lovely R34 Skylines in the shed).
Nobody in my area appreciates these fine Nissan engines, they still buy 350/351 dinosaurs round here with a Holley on them to drop into VK Commodores and XE Falcons. Connoisseurs drive VL Turbos. Rich kids get VTSS's. You car enthusiasts may be also interested in this. Yesterday I visited a property with an interesting collection of cars. 1948 TC MG 1948 MG Saloon The last Elfin open wheeler produced (A Formula Ford) An immaculate fully restored MGB Austin Healy Sprite with a CAMS log book current from 1968 A French car (name I cant remember, but it has one of those pointy tails of that era) that was a competitor in the first AGP at Phillip Island in 1928 A Pre war Vauxhall Sedan A clubman sports car powered by a 1500cc Coventry Climax A Starion Turbo "Club Car" The sports and racing cars are competition cars from in their early life and have done almost no road kilos. All have highly developed race engines and are regularly raced in historic events. Under construction, an open wheel hill climb special powered by a Lexus V8 - what a sweet looking engine this is! These cars are all sitting in open sheds around a paddock, a lifetime collection of a bloke whose been in motorsoport for 40 years.
